Chapter 17

August

I stare into my refrigerator, deciding what to cook for dinner, when someone tries to beat down my front door. I pop up so fast that I bang my head on the side shelf. Rubbing my head, I pad to the door and yank it open.

Logan fills my doorway, and his smile falls. “Why are you holding your head?” He moves my hand to inspect my hair like a monkey groomer.

I paw his hands away with a laugh. “I’m fine, Mighty Joe Young. I just bonked my head on the refrigerator door.”

“Want me to kick its ass?” He gives the refrigerator a dangerous glare.

I walk back into the kitchen to continue my quest for food. “What brings you over?” I grab a box of penne pasta and toss it on the counter.

“You’re supposed to cook me dinner once a week, remember?” He grabs a cookie out of the jar and takes a bite. “You’re a few weeks behind.”

“Perfect timing.” I glance at the crumbs falling out of his mouth and swipe the remainder of the cookie from his hand. “Don’t ruin your appetite, young man. And clean up those crumbs. You weren’t raised in a barn.” I place the cookie on a napkin and grab the ingredients I need to make alfredo sauce.

“Chicken or shrimp?” I ask, turning to face him.

“Shrimp. For sure.” He sweeps the crumbs into his hand and dumps them in the trash under the sink.

“Thank God. I can cook them frozen. I would’ve had to thaw out the chicken,” I admit, reaching into the freezer to pull out the package I need. “Will you turn the broiler on high, please?”

“Sure thing.” He walks around the island. “As soon as you tell me what a broiler is.” He puts his hands behind his back and rocks on his heels like a little boy.

I laugh as I walk over to the oven. “Come here, let me show you.” He walks behind me and looks over my head. Freaking giant. “Ok, so in the oven you can either bake or broil. If I ask you to preheat the oven, you push the bake button, and then set it to whatever temperature you need, like this.” I demonstrate how to set the temperature. “But I need to broil the shrimp. So instead, you hit this broil button.” I point to it. “There are only two broil settings: high and low. I need it on high, so I’ll hit the broil button and then the up button until it says high.” I turn the broiler on for demonstration.

I lean my head back to look at him. “Got it?”

He smiles warmly down at me. “Got it.”

I move across the counter to start mixing the sauce. “Can you grab a pan from that cabinet over there,” I ask, pointing next to the oven,. “and stick it on the top rack? It needs to warm up before we put the frozen shrimp on it.” He grabs the pan and pops it in the oven and dusts his hands off with a sly grin.
